Mike DitkaDungy

Today we almost stumped you on the Mystery Monday post-Super Bowl question:

Only TWO men have played in and won a Super Bowl and then come back and won the game as a head coach.  Who are they?

Mike Ditka – player on the Dallas Cowboys in SB VI, head coach of the Chicago Bears in SB XX.

Tony Dungy – player on the Pittsburgh Steelers in SB XIII, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in SB XLI.

We would have had three, but Tom Flores didn’t play in Super Bowl IV for the Chiefs, even though he was on the team.  He later coached the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins.

Tony Dungy, by the way, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer. Yesterday, Gary Kubiak took the team he played for to a Super Bowl win as head coach. Kubiak was John Elway’s backup on the Broncos back in the 1980’s when they lost three times in the big game.

Our Word of the Day is SAGACITY – meaning acuteness of mental discernment and soundness of judgment.

Thanks for listening!
